SMOKEY BAY SEAFOOD HATCHERY SEED SALES DIVISION

August 2009

Smokey Bay Seafood Now Marketing Coast Seafood and Kona Coast Shellfish Hatchery Production

Coast Seafoods and Penn Cove have nearly a century of shellfish production experience between both of them and have the two largest and most technologically advanced shellfish hatcheries in the world:  Coast Seafoods’ hatchery located in Quilcene, Washington and the Kona Coast Shellfish hatchery in Hawaii which is a joint venture of both Coast Seafoods and Penn Cove Mussels.  These 2 hatcheries have a combined production capacity of over 39 billion oyster and clam larvae annually which makes Coast Seafoods / Penn Cove the largest producer of oyster and clam larvae in the world.

This new partnership for Smokey Bay with these two major shellfish companies allows us to broaden our product offering to the shellfish industry to include oyster and clam larvae, oyster and clam single seed, and oyster seed bags.  We are pleased to offer these exceptionally high quality hatchery products to shellfish farming companies in North America and internationally on behalf of Coast Seafoods and Kona Coast Shellfish, LLC.

LEADING THE WAY IN OYSTER AND CLAM PRODUCTION

Coast Seafoods’ Quilcene Hatchery

Coast Seafoods have been leading the way in oyster production since its formation in 1946. To meet their growing need for consistent, high quality oyster and clam larvae and seed, the company developed the Quilcene, Washington hatchery in 1978.  With the rapid growth of Coast Seafoods since then, the Quilcene hatchery has undergone significant growth.   Advanced technology, experienced technicians and a superb natural environment have combined to make this hatchery the worldwide leader in oyster larvae production, producing over 20 billion oyster larvae annually.

A NEW SHELLFISH HATCHERY BUILT TO INCREASE SUPPLY

Kona Coast Shellfish Hatchery

Kona Coast Shellfish, LLC is a new shellfish hatchery company created in 2006 as a joint venture between Coast Seafood Company and Penn Cove Shellfish LLC.

The new hatchery was constructed in 2007 near Kona on the big island of Hawaii at Keahole Point, adjacent to the Kona Airport at the National Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) for the production of oyster and manila clam larvae and seed.  The hatchery has an 8,500 square foot hatchery building along with massive algae tanks and ponds to produce over 15 billion larvae and 250 million seed annually.

WORLD CLASS SEED PRODUCTION IN THE TROPICS

NELHA National Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority

There are several reasons for locating  this new hatchery at NELHA, including:

Perennial sunshine that provides the solar energy to grow the algae necessary without extensive power costs;

Warm surface seawater (24-27 degrees C) and cold, deep seawater (7 degrees C) provide an opportunity to utilize high volumes of pristine seawater at stable water temperatures and low cost;

The Island of Hawaii and the NELHA site serve as one of the most remote and natural quarantine facilities in the world, making it possible to handle a wide variety of shellfish species;

The hatchery is in close proximity to both Asian and North and South American markets.  The Keohole International Airport is only minutes from the site.

PROVEN EXPERTISE IN HATCHERY TECHNIQUES

The manila clam's potential for beautiful pattern and shell color begins at Coast Shellfish' hatcheries.

Proven Expertise

Coast Seafoods is the established vanguard of shellfish hatchery technology.  Their professional staff, with advanced degrees in biology, fisheries, and management, has pioneered advanced technologies at this hatchery as well as through working with leading research facilities.  They have developed proven expertise in hatchery techniques such as high density growing, selective breeding and the production of triploid oysters.  They also have substantial production of manila clam seed.

Triploid oysters show greatly reduced gonad development and increased glycogen storage.  This offers tremendous commercial potential because of their more rapid growth, greater firmness, better flavor and all season harvest ability.
